Cuéntame
A storytelling podcast of inclusion that celebrates, rewrites, and embraces differences in Latinx culture.

Alfred, Erik and Lizette are CSULA graduates who identify as chicanxs, that wanted to create a space for people like them to share their stories. They decided to use a podcast as the medium, recording in the heart of Boyle Heights in East Los Angeles.

Cuéntame translates to “tell me”, coming from cuento, which means story. In each episode, guests share stories on a variety of topics. Some stories are light and whimsical, while others are more delicate and intimate.

For the identity of Cuéntame, I gathered many visual elements–vivid colors immediately came to mind because they’re so often found throughout Latinx cultures. We wanted to convey community and shared joy, to capture the essence of storytelling.

Based on the initial research and with input from the Cuéntame team, I created this initial sketch

I wanted the logo to be friendly but not too playful; although many stories will deal with light topics, there will be times in the podcast when the conversation becomes serious and somber.

The curved path of the word-mark represents a coming together of voices and communities, and the flourishes and accents are an abstraction of traditional Latinx designs. The final version contains solid letters that portray a serious tone, and a diverse color palette to symbolize strong cultural inspirations.

One of my favorite parts of this project was going to breakfast with Alfred, Erik and Lizette, talking about stories we wanted to tell, stories we hoped to hear, and just enjoying the time and company.
Moving forward I will create graphic elements for different episodes and events, that will be shared across digital platforms and occasionally through printed media.
